American painter, 1879–1956
BiographyBorn in New York City, Beal studied with William Merritt Chase and at the Art Studnets League with George Bridgman and Frank Vincent DuMond. He served as president of the League in 1916, 1918, and from 1920 to 1930. Beal is best known for his festive scenes of the circus and of holiday crowds in the city, as well as his colorful landscapes painted in Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts. He exhibited regularly at Kraushaar Galleries and in major juried exhibitions at the National Academy of Design, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
