BiographyHassam was a prolific American Impressionist painter and printmaker. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Hassam began his career as an illustrator for popular magazines like Harper's Weekly and The Century. He attended classes at the Lowell Institute and the Boston Art Club and had his first solo show in Boston in 1883. In 1886 he moved to France to study at the Académie Julian. He returned to the States and settled in New York in 1889, experimenting with an impressionist style of painting. In 1897 he and nine other artists broke from the Society of American Artists to create The Ten, a group of American Impressionists that would exhibit together for the next two decades.
