Thomas Wilmer DewingAmerican painter, 1851–1938

Dewing was born near Boston and studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris. He returned to the United States by 1879 and settled in New York. He married the accomplished painter Maria Oakey Dewing. He is best known for tonalist paintings that situate women in moody, dreamlike settings, often sylvan landscapes or aestheticized interiors. Dewing was a member of the Ten American Painters, a group of American Impressionists who seceded from the Society of American Artists in 1897. He spent his summers at the Cornish Art Colony in New Hampshire.
