BiographyJohn Rogers was born and raised in the Boston area. He worked as a master mechanic before deciding to study art in France and Italy. He is best known for his tabletop sculptures, produced in large editions, which featured groups of figures. These groups--including a young couple going to the parson and a family playing checkers--reflect middle-class Victorian values. He also produced sculptures of Civil War subjects. It is believed that as many as 100,000 casts of his sculptures were produced in his lifetime.
