Ben-ZionAmerican writer and artist, 1897–1987

Born in the Ukraine, Ben-Zion arrived in the United States in 1920. He wrote fairy tales and poems as Benzion Weinman, but dropped the use of his last name when he became an exhibiting artist. Ben-Zion was a member of the Expressionist group, The Ten, with Adolf Gottlieb and Mark Rothko. He produced welded metal sculptures as well as paintings and etchings, and he wrote essays on art. He often explored scriptural and Jewish themes in his work.
