French painter, printmaker, and sculptor, 1808–1879
BiographyDaumier was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor. His comic drawings chronicled the social and political volatility of Paris in the mid-19th century. His work appeared regularly in the magazines Le Charivari and La Caricature. Daumier was extremely influential on American artists and illustrators in the late 19th century. American realist painters John Sloan, Robert Henri, and Everett Shinn were among those artists who collected Daumier's published lithographs.
