George Rickey

American sculptor, 1907–2002
BiographyGeorge Rickey spent his early life and study abroad, first in Scotland and later studying in Paris with Fernand Leger and Amedee Ozenfant. His early painted sculptures are reminiscent of the work of Alexander Calder while his mature work is characterized by the use of stainless steel and basic geometric shapes. Rickey's work came to be known following his participation in Documenta III in 1964. The kinetic sculpture that he exhibited there is characteristic of all of his non-motorized work, which relies on the wind to create its complex movements. Rickey achieved great recognition during his lifetime and is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, among many others.
