American painter and illustrator, 1874–1956
BiographyBrother of the author Sherwood Anderson, Karl Anderson was born in Ohio. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago, while working as an illustrator to pay his way. In 1900 he traveled to France to complete his study of art in the academies there. Anderson became a successful illustrator for mainstream magazines. Travel to Europe eventually took him to Giverny, where his friend Frederick Frieseke convinced him to stay and study Claude Monet's impressionist style. Anderson settled in Westport, Connecticut, in 1912. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Salmagundi Club, and Grand Central Galleries.
