Ellen du Pont Wheelwright

American artist, 1889–1968
BiographyBorn Ellen du Pont, Wheelwright was an artist and art collector in Wilmington, Delaware. She studied with Hugh Breckenridge, Oscar Biebrich, Charles Hawthorne, and Robert Brackman. She also joined the Studio Group in Wilmington, and studied sculpture with Conway Sawyer and Alexander Archipenko. She exhibited in Philadelphia, Providence, Wilmington, and New York (at Macbeth Gallery). She married landscape architect Robert Wheelwright. The Wheelwrights exhibited regularly at the Museum and comprised half of a four-person show "Four Delaware Artists" here in 1950. The Wheelwrights lived at Goodstay in Wilmington, where they restored and enhanced the Tudor-style gardens. Gardens and flowers were among Wheelwright's favorite subjects.
