American illustrator, 1869–1940
BiographyBorn in New Jersey, Florence Scovel Shinn (1869-1940) attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she was at the center of a lively group of artists, including her future husband Everett Shinn. After marriage, they settled in New York. Their Greenwich Village home at 112 Waverly Place became a gathering place for artists and actors, and they constructed an outdoor theater to stage plays with their friends.
