BiographyBest known as a painter of ships at sea, Briscoe was born in Baltimore and studied with Edward Moran in Philadelphia. He traveled to Europe to finish his artistic education and settled in Philadelphia where he gained renown for his history and marine paintings. Starting in 1887, Briscoe's ten panoramic paintings of the Battle of Gettysburg impressed audiences around Pennsylvania and up and down the East Coast.
