BiographyAn avid composer and owner of a lumber business in Wilmington, Henry Tatnall did not begin painting until after the Civil War, when he was in his thirties. He found artistic success rapidly. In the 1870s and 1880s, Tatnall was at the center of a growing group of Brandywine Valley artists, including Franklin Dullin Briscoe, James Hamilton, Jefferson D. Chalfant, William Harnett, and Thomas Moran.
