Bolton Coit Brown

Bolton Brown was an influential instructor, master printmaker, and founder of the Byrdcliffe Colony in the Catskill Mountains. Brown was born and raised in upstate New York and received his masters degree in painting from Syracuse University. He relocated to California in 1891 to found the Art Department at Stanford University. In the nearby Sierra Nevada Range, Brown became an active mountain climber. Brown was hired to plan and manage Byrdcliffe Colony, an artists' colony in Woodstock, New York, bringing him back to the East Coast. Brown gained renown as a lithographer, producing more than 400 lithographs of his own and printing work for John Sloan, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent and others.
