Henry Schnakenberg

American painter, 1892–1970
BiographyBorn in New Brighton, New York, Schnakenberg was working as an insurance salesman until he attended the 1913 Armory Show. The groundbreaking display of modern European and American art that he saw there inspired him to begin taking classes at the Art Students League, where he studied with Kenneth Hayes Miller and John Sloan. Schnakenberg became a skilled painter in the naturalist tradition. He split his time between New England and New York and also collected the work of American artists.
