American artist and illustrator, 1895–1963
BiographyA painter, printmaker, and illustrator, Thorne is best known for her illustrations of dogs, which appeared in popular children's books in the 1930s and 1940s. Thorne grew up in Manitoba, Canada, and studied art in Germany. With the outbreak of World War I she left Germany and worked in England. By the 1920s she was in the United States and gaining a reputation as an illustrator and artist. Her drypoints and drawings were exhibited at Schwartz gallery in April 1929, and she was active with Associated American Artists in the thirties. She would illustrate more than 50 books, some of which she wrote.

Thorne was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, and her work can be found in museums including the Brooklyn Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
