Gustave Baumann

American printmaker, 1881–1971
BiographyBaumann is best known for his colored woodcuts of the American Southwest. Born in Magdeburg, Germany, Baumann moved to the United States at age 10. He attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and worked in an engraving house, before returning to Germany to study wood carving in Munich. By 1908 he was producing color woodcuts and earning his living as a graphic artist. He became part of the Brown County Art Colony in Indiana, before moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1918, where he would spend the rest of his life.
