Max Weber

Born in Russia, Weber moved with his family to the United States in 1891. He studied with Arthur Wesley Dow at the Pratt Institute, learning to carve wood and produce woodblock prints. He taught high school before traveling to Paris in 1905. In Paris Weber found inspiration in contemporary art movements, like Post-Impressionism and Cubism, and in the African art that inspired artists in France. In 1913 he had his first solo exhibition at the Newark Museum, and the following year he published Cubist Poems, which combined poems and woodcuts, establishing him as one of the leading modern artists in the United States. A restless intellect, Weber would continue to experiment with different styles and media throughout his long career.
