Label TextIn this painting, Sloan posed his model Carmen Harris in a comfortable, contrapposto stance on the stairs of his studio. The resulting figure is monumental and classical, a complete contrast to Marcel Duchamp’s already-famous Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912), which had gained notoriety at the 1913 Armory Show. Sloan, who befriended Duchamp in the teens, may have titled this painting with a knowing wink at Duchamp’s notorious canvas.
