Label TextThe nascent Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was supported by John Ruskin, a leading art critic, who encouraged them to turn away from current artistic trends and instead to paint the world in all its glorious detail. This scene of Ruskin’s wife, Euphemia (Effie), was produced on a painting trip in Scotland in the summer of 1853. The Ruskins’ marriage was annulled in 1854, and Effie married Millais a year later.
