Label TextThis Surrey landscape southwest of London was painted by John Everett Millais’ older brother, William Henry. Although not an official member of the Brotherhood, William is thought to have been the first of the group to paint according to John Ruskin’s principles of direct observation and detailed recording of the natural world. The view depicted is looking across Crooksbury Common at one of its three bronze age ‘barrows’ or burial sites.
