Label TextFrom November 1918 to October 1919, The Ladies' Home Journal ran "Souvenir Pictures of the Great War," 36 images by 13 artists, including Frank Schoonover, who painted 15 of the series. He did not travel to the battle areas, but rather used photographs and articles in the newspapers, especially the New York Times, for his research. In October 1918, the German government had already asked for armistice discussions as their army retreated along the Western Front in France, while American and French forces continued their aerial assault. Schoonover - adding a sardonic tone to his title - imagined the chaotic scene.
