Label TextIn Mary Mapes Dodge's novel of 1865, Hans Brinker is a poor Dutch boy who participates in Holland's annual ice skating race. He nobly lets a friend — a poor boy — win the grand prize of the Silver Skates. After numerous editions throughout the world, the story was still popular when Frank Schoonover created his 1924 cover and frontispiece.
