Label TextAn inscription on the reverse of this painting indicates that it was once owned by Irénée du Pont (1876-1963), who commissioned it as a poster for the American Liberty League, an organization founded in 1934 primarily by wealthy corporate and political leaders (including du Pont) to oppose the New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A charcoal sketch shows that the words "American Liberty League" in the sky have been painted out, perhaps after the League disbanded when Roosevelt was reelected in a landslide for an unprecedented third term. The painting, with a newly-clear sky, was reproduced as a Delaware Heritage Commission poster.
