Label TextSolfatara is a volcano near Naples, Italy, in a region of great interest to artists and naturalists in Vedder's day. The area around the Bay of Naples was famous for the remains of the ancient Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum, both rediscovered in the 18th century. Solfatara was also visited by naturalists interested in studying of the effect of the volcanic activity on the geology, flora, and fauna of the region.
