Label TextHenry Wallis was a generation younger than the original Pre-Raphaelites. He trained at the Royal Academy and in Paris under Charles Gleyre. The dark palette can be attributed to his academic training. But his subjects, both social realist and literary, were very much in keeping with Pre-Raphaelite interests. Shakespeare’s controversial tragedy, Timon of Athens is the basis for this painting in which Timon mistakenly accuses his servant of greed and bribery.
