Label TextMaud Tousey Fangel was a leading illustrator of children from the 1930s through the 1950s. Her works appeard on magazines covers and in a broad range of advertisements. She developed a signature style, featuring curly-haired and red-cheeked children. As a result, Fangel also prospered as a children's portraitist. Drawing children, she needed to work quickly, and so often used pastel, her impressionistic strokes conveying the liveliness of her subjects. In 1968, the year of her death at 87, racial prejudice caused publishers to reject Fangel's illustrated book about an African-American child.
