Label TextThe Archibald Jones of the title, a working-class employee of a British diamond merchant, has become embroiled in an intrigue of stolen gems, and in this scene tries to escape the scene of a jewel theft. His sudden departure from a train attracts the attention of an observer. Focusing mainly on facial expressions, Becher uses a vignette style, where contours are shaded off, blending with the page. Illustrators often used this method to accomodate text that would be printed on the published page.Stanley Massey Arthurs
