Label TextGrace S. Richmond published a series of light-hearted mystery stories about a kindly country doctor named Burns, whose red hair and fiery temper earn him the nickname Red Pepper Burns. In Red and Black, the plot involves the minister seen here, named Reverend Black.Born in Kenton, Delaware, Stanley Arthurs was one of Howard Pyle's few students from the state. He illustrated a wide range of subjects and was especially known for American history scenes. This illustration highlights the range of his talent when compared to his oil painting at the left.
