Label TextThe subject depicted on this plate or “charger” is drawn from the chivalric lore of the Middle Ages. The motto, loosely translated as "without fear and above reproach," is that of the Chevalier de Bayard, a 15th century French knight. It came to be associated with all brave knights, including St. George, the patron saint of England, who is shown here vanquishing the dragon.
