Label TextMorning was painted when Dewing returned to Boston after studying painting in Paris. The canvas was first exhibited in 1880 at the Doll and Richards Gallery in Boston, where visitors found it eccentric and difficult to understand. A critic of the day compared this American painting to “the Burne-Jones school of English painters.”
