Label TextFranklin Schenck worked as curator for the Philadelphia Art Students' League. He lived on the premises, kept the studio in order, and served as a model. The Philadelphia painter Thomas Eakins taught at the League from its inception in 1886 until it closed in 1892. During that time Schenck served as a model for at least seven paintings by Eakins. In this portrait, Schenck's relaxed pose is echoed in the informality of his hair and clothing, a rather uncommon image in the late 19th century.
