Label TextDr. Thomas H. Fenton (1856–1929) was a prominent ophthalmologist and art patron in Philadelphia. His daughter, sculptor Beatrice Fenton, recalled that the portrait was never finished because Fenton was too busy to continue the many sittings that Eakins' painstaking method required. While Eakins nearly completed the rendering of Fenton's head, his figure and the background remain unfinished.
