Label TextPrimarily a self-taught California artist, Daniel Sayre Groesbeck served with the Canadian armed forces in Russia in 1918-1919. His experiences there--especially visits to a Russian monastery--inspired ornate paintings such as the image of an elaborately dressed woman among glittering brass and gilt candle sticks and religious icons. Groesbeck worked as a concept artist for director Cecil B. DeMille from the early 1920s until his death, working on The Ten Commandments (1923) and Samson and Delilah (1949), among other movies.
