Label TextPrimarily a self-taught California artist, Daniel Sayre Groesbeck served with the Canadian armed forces in Russia in 1918-1919. His experiences there--especially visits to a Russian monastery--inspired ornate paintings such as the image of an elaborately dressed woman among glittering brass and gilt candle sticks and religious icons. Groesbeck worked as a concept artist for director Cecil B. DeMille from the early 1920s until his death, working on The Ten Commandments (1923) and Samson and Delilah (1949), among other movies.Ida Marion Dougherty (Aylward)
