Label TextThis may depict Generl Israel Putnam, a general of the American Revolution, who in 1779 rushed on horseback from his home in Brooklyn, Connecticut, to Stamford, to rally reinforcements against approaching British troops. The famous ride that made him a celebrated folk hero included a treacherous slope near Greenwich. A native of Greenland who received his early training in Denmark, Dan Smith was a versatile and prolific illustration who began his career in about 1890 as a sketch artist for Leslie's Weekly in New York. He covered the American West until 1897 when he joined Hearst's newspapers and worked as a war artist-correspondent during the Spanish American War. For many years, he drew the covers of the Sunday magazine section of the New York World.
