Label TextThure de Thulstrup was described as a "dependable workhorse" in the Harper's art department, where he was a staff artist between 1880 and 1890, turning his hand to any subject. Born in Sweden, he immigrated to the United States in 1873. Youthful experience as a soldier gave him expertise as an illustrator of military subjects. His suave style is evident here in the nuance of expression and gesture. His use of highlights - at the parasol’s edge, at the lady's wrists, and in the dappled sunlight - brighten the black and white media.
