Label TextGeorge Richmond was best known for his watercolor society portraits. This portrait of an unknown middle-aged woman in Victorian dress is painted with a combination of stippling, providing intense detail, as in the face, and areas of broad wash, as seen in the torso, which is typical of Richmond’s mature style. Richmond did not flatter his sitters but rather described his portraits as “the truth lovingly told.”
