Label TextThe model for this work was Mary Emma Jones. Sandys first met her in 1862 in Norwich where she was working with a traveling theater company. They fell in love, and in 1866, Emma gave birth to the first of five children. The work of their daughter Winifred is also included in the Museum's Bancroft Collection. The couple remained together until Sandys’ death in 1904.
