Label TextOne of the earliest illustrations Sandys completed, this deathbed scene, in which a young sailor returns from sea to find his beloved has passed away, illustrated a poem by Marian E. James published in the popular periodical Once a Week. The high level of emotion, emphasized by the placement of the figures in the immediate foreground of the picture plane, was one of the many innovative stratagems the Pre-Raphaelites introduced to illustration.
