Label TextAlthough not a founding member of the Pre‑Raphaelite Brotherhood, George Frederick Watts spent most of his life working outside the prescribed system. Watts settled at
Little Holland House in London, the home of his life‑long benefactors, Sarah and Toby Prinsep. The Prinsep’s home was a gathering point for artists and patrons, including many of the Pre‑Raphaelites.

In this portrait of Eveleen Tennant, painted on the Isle of Wight, another Prinsep enclave, Watts captures her beauty in a pensive, thoughtful pose. Her precisely delineated porcelain skin contrasts with the loosely painted hair and foliage.
