Label TextGiven the gold bird on the wind vane, this painting may have been created to illustrate an edition of the Brothers Grimms' fairy tale The Golden Bird. The apple blossoms in the foreground may reflect the apple tree that plays a part in the story.

Ethel Franklin Betts Bains studied with Howard Pyle, as did her sister and fellow illustrator Anna Whelan Betts. She was a specialist in the illustration of children's literature.
