Label TextArt critic Nelson C. White wrote about Schenck in a 1931 issue of Art in America. He described Schenck's Thoreau-like life in a cottage he built on Long Island surrounded by flower and vegetable gardens. About Schenck's lyric style of painting, White wrote, "He painted to please himself alone, unmindful of anything except his own vision of Nature and his own joy of creation."
