William Majors

American printmaker, 1930–1982
BiographyWilliam Majors received an undergraduate degree at John Herron Art Institute (how Herron School of Art and Design) in Indianapolis following study at the Cleveland School of Art. A John Hay Whitney Foundation fellowship supported his study in Florence and following that, the artist settled in New York in 1962. There he became involved with the Spiral Group, a collective of African American artists that included Romare Bearden, Emma Amos, Norman Lewis, and others. Majors had worked in figurative painting and drawing prior to his settling in New York but beginning in the early 1960s explored abstraction in printmaking. The artist taught printmaking throughout the United States, and his prints are included in numerous public collections.
