Felrath Hines

Born in 1913 in Indianapolis, Felrath Hines studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the mid-1940s and later design at the Pratt Institute. The artist was inspired by Cubism and the De Stijl movement and later by American modernists such as Ad Reinhardt and Stuart Davis. Hines became involved with the Civil Rights movement in the early 1960s and joined the Spiral Group, a collective of African American artists formed in New York in 1963. Hines served as a conservator at the Whitney Museum of American Art and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, among others, and his paintings are in numerous public collections including the Ackland Art Museum and the Nasher Museum of Art.
