Thomas Downing

American painter, 1928–1985
BiographyThomas Downing was born in Suffolk, Virginia in 1928 and received an undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon College. He later studied at Pratt Institute and Catholic University under Kenneth Noland. Downing became associated with the Washington Color School of painting, exhibiting frequently in Washington, DC, and in 1964, was included in Clement Greenberg's exhibition, Post-Painterly Abstraction. In 1971, Downing moved to New York to teach briefly at the New School of Visual Art and later settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
