Elizabeth Catlett

American sculptor and printmaker, 1915–2012
BiographySculptor and printmaker, Elizabeth Catlett was born in 1915 in Washington, DC, was a graduate of Howard University, and received her master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1940. Catlett settled in Mexico in the 1940s and became involved with the Taller de Gráfica Popular. She taught at the National School of Fine Arts in Mexico City from 1958 until her retirement in 1976 and is best known for her stylized depictions of the human form.
