BiographyInsley spent his early years in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was an apprentice to his father Henry Earle Insley, one of America's pioneer photographers, and a drafting student of an architect uncle; he was otherwise self-taught. In the 1860s, he began his long career, becoming known for his paintings of New York City and its surrounding areas, as well as of the New England states.
