Esther Becker Goetz

American painter, illustrator, and graphic artist, 1907–1971

BiographyBorn in Buffalo, Goetz studied at the Art Students League in New York with John Sloan and Harry Wickey. She lived in New York City, where her husband George McCoy drove a taxi. Their good friends included the artist-illustrators Don and Lydia Freeman, and Goetz contributed images of city life to Freeman's magazine. Goetz was the illustrator for Mr. Nosey, 1945, and she designed Christmas cards for Hallmark. Goetz was a member of the Society of Independent Artists from 1931 to 1944. She exhibited there during these years and also at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1934; the Art Institute of Chicago in 1936 and 1939; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in1935; the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1938; the Museum of the City of New York in 1944, 1945 (solo), and 1954; the Albright Art Gallery in 1945 (solo); and the Galerie Moderne, New York, in 1953.
