Russell Patterson

American illustrator, 1893–1977
BiographyBorn in Omaha, Nebraska and raise in Montreal, Russell Patterson is best known for his Art Deco magazine illustrations. Trained at McGill University and the Art Institute of Chicago, Patterson began his career as a catalogue illustrator for department stores and attempted to find work as a fine artist, but was mostly unsuccessful. After moving to New York City in 1925, Patterson found his stride illustrating magazine covers with figures from the Jazz Age. He worked for such publications as Judge, Life, Vogue, College Humor, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Red Book, and Saturday Evening Post. His work helped to promote the iconic idea of flapper fashion. in the 1930s Patterson additionally worked as a set designer.
