Helen Farr Sloan

American painter, 1911–2005
BiographyHelen Farr Sloan was a painter, teacher, philanthropist, and second wife of American realist painter John Sloan (1871–1951). Born in New York City, Helen Farr attended the Brearley School for Girls. At age 16, she enrolled at the Art Students League where she studied with John Sloan. In the 1930s, she spent several summers in Santa Fe with the Sloans, where she became an active part of that city's arts community. She compiled her notes from Sloan's classes and collaborated with him to produce Gist of Art, published in 1939. After the death of Sloan's first wife, the painters were married and she dedicated herself to her husband and his legacy, distributing works from his estate. Starting in 1963, she donated more than 2,600 works by Sloan, his personal papers, and more than 1,800 works by other artists to the Delaware Art Museum.
