BiographyAnna Lea Merritt was born in Philadelphia, but spent most of her working life in England. Her work is most often situated within the British, late-Victorian milieu. She was largely self-trained, but studied Anatomy at the Women's medical College of Pennsylvania. In 1870, while living in London, she met, trained with, and later married Henry Merritt, a painter and picture restorer. She exhibited in the United Kingdom at the Royal Academy, in Paris at the Salon, and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts.
